In Remembrance

Thu Sep 11, 2008, 7:36 AM
  • Mood: Emotional
  • Listening to: Paul McCartney - "Let It Be"
  • Reading: 9/11 Artists Respond, Volume One
"When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
'Let it be'
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
'Let it be'

Let it be, let it be, let it be , let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
'Let if be'

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, Let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
'Let it be'

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
'Let it be'

Let it be, let it be, let it be , let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
'Let it be'

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
'Let it be'

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer
'Let it be'

Let it be, let it be, let it be , let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
'Let it be'"

While lacking visuals, excerpts from Fabian Nicieza's "Simple Physics":

My first thought was a little selfish. I thought the skyline was going to look WRONG without it.

Because the towers had been a constant in my life since I was a boy.

It was Sunday at dusk. We shouldn't have been allowed up there, but no one stopped us.

We just walked out on to the roof.

We'd watched the towers going up slowly anytime we drove on the RARITAN BRIDGE. But to be up there...

I remember I thought the WIND would just throw me off the top.

The SOUTH TOWER wasn't even finished yet. It looked so... FRAIL.

"Dad, what stops these things from falling over?"

My dad was an engineer. When three words would suffice, he used three thousand.

He lost me during rotating struts, shift flow, and earthquake faults. The gist of it was:

"NOTHING can topple these towers."

[...]

Going into the city for the first time since it happened.

What will it be like, not seeing the towers for the first time in twenty years?

It wasn't just a building. It was so many lives and so many memories for so many people.

My dad was thinking like an engineer. He should have considered simple physics. That's an easy equation.

All that was needed to topple the towers was HATE.

If only we could all remember the lesson of this day. Look how far we have come... and how backward we have gone.

*HUGS* The days immediately after were so uplifting in a way, people coming together and supporting each other. I wish we could have just held onto that.

my mother's old office building used to be right off of battery park and so she says that one of the planes seemed to pass very closely. when i was in middle school, one of my best friends and i used to hang out in soho and around houston street. one of the most welcome sights used to be seeing the sunset-lit twin-towers silhouetted down the avenues. i still have a photo i took of the city from atop one of the towers from 1999.

my family has since moved to new jersey as of the last few years, but whenever i've ridden the train into nyc through the world trade center stop since then, even through the ground-zero reconstruction, all of the passengers more or less exit in silence.
